gendered language in teaching reviews

Very interesting tool from Ben Schmidt: Gendered Language in Teaching Reviews. It examines the frequency of certain words in RateMyProfessor reviews. I tried out “mean,” “unfair,” and “strict,” and all three of these words were found more frequently in RMP reviews about female professors. I’m not surprised, but it is a little depressing. I know that RMP tends to attract those at either end of the “I hated this prof!” and “I loved this prof!” spectrum, and the results are skewed that way, but still…the tool does show the consistently gendered nature of the language that students use in teaching evaluations.
